Does Your Wedding Pro Have a Good Reputation?

Writer's picture: Brooke EdwardsBrooke Edwards

Let’s be real—planning a wedding is a BIG deal, and hiring the right vendors can make or break your day. The last thing you want is a no-show photographer, a DJ who plays Cotton-Eyed Joe on repeat, or a videographer who “forgets” to hit record during your vows. (Yikes!)

So, how do you make sure your wedding pros are the real deal? Here’s how to do your homework and avoid wedding-day disasters.

How to Stalk—Uh, I Mean Research—Your Wedding Vendors

1. Read Those Reviews (and Read Between the Lines!)

The internet is your best friend here. Check out reviews on Google, The Knot, WeddingWire, and even social media. If a vendor has glowing five-star reviews that sound like love letters, that’s a great sign.

🚩 Red flag: If you spot multiple reviews saying things like “Never showed up,” “Ghosted us after we paid,” or “My grandma could’ve done a better job,” run the other way!

2. Ask for References (A.K.A. Real-Life Tea)

A solid wedding pro should have happy couples who are more than willing to sing their praises. Ask for references and actually follow up!

🚩 Red flag: If they dodge this question or give you sketchy excuses, it’s a no-go.

3. Social Media Sleuthing (You Know You’re Good at It)

Vendors who love what they do will showcase their work! Scroll through their Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Check out their photos, behind-the-scenes clips, and how they interact with clients.

Good sign: People are tagging them in wedding posts, and their comment section is full of happy couples.

🚩 Red flag: Every post is a blurry iPhone shot from 2017, or worse—angry couples complaining about missing footage or bad service.

4. Get the Inside Scoop from Other Wedding Pros

Wedding vendors work together all the time, so if your photographer, planner, or venue has never heard of someone (or gives them a side-eye), that’s worth noting.

Good sign: Other pros rave about them and say, “Oh, they’re AMAZING to work with!”

🚩 Red flag: They get a polite but vague “Oh… yeah, I’ve heard of them.” Translation: Proceed with caution!

5. Meet Them and Trust Your Gut

Hop on a call, grab a coffee, or set up a Zoom chat. Do they seem organized? Are they excited about your wedding? Do they make you feel like a priority? If something feels off—trust that feeling.

🚩 Red flag: They show up late, barely listen to what you want, or give off major used-car-salesman vibes.

Red Flags That Scream “DON’T BOOK THEM!”

No Contract – If they say “Oh, we don’t really do contracts,” just know they’re also saying, “We can disappear with your money.”

Poor Communication – If it takes them weeks to reply now, imagine trying to reach them the week of your wedding. No thanks.

More Bad Reviews Than Good Ones – A couple of bad reviews? Normal. But a pattern of complaints? That’s a dealbreaker.

No Proof of Past Work – No portfolio? No thank you.

Unprofessional Behavior – If they badmouth other vendors, seem scattered, or just give you bad vibes, trust your instincts.

Green Flags That Mean You’ve Found a Keeper

Rave Reviews & Happy Clients – Past couples can’t stop talking about how awesome they are.

Quick & Clear Communication – They respond fast and actually answer your questions.

Professional & Organized – Clear contracts, no sketchy payment terms, and they make the process stress-free.

Loved by Other Vendors – Your other wedding pros have nothing but good things to say about them.

Genuinely Excited About Your Wedding – You’re not just another date on their calendar—they actually care!

Final Thoughts

Picking the right wedding vendors is kind of like dating—you want someone reliable, fun, and totally committed to making your day incredible. Do your research, trust your instincts, and only book vendors who make you feel confident and excited. Because your wedding day should be nothing short of amazing!
